Hey Vita, I have a question. The begonia seed pack says, light aids germination and keep at 80 degrees. Do I put the heat mat under the grow light with the cell pack on it?
I’m in Central MO, so I’m an intermediate day. I started my onions a couple weeks ago and had great germination. I’m growing the “Candy” onion & I’m also trying the “Long Keeping Rainbow Trio” that I had ordered from Renee’s Garden. Glad I watched your video, because I didn’t realize I needed to take them off the heat mat, so I just took them off! Thanks Vita.
My new favorite gardening channel. Thank you.❤
Awww. Thanks so much, friend! 😊💞🌸
What a GREAT video. She explains so well.
Hi Dawnita. Thank you so much, friend. I truly appreciate your feedback on my video as well as your support. Happy gardening! 😊🙏🏼🌸
How often should I water them, and how much? Im so afraid of rot!!😮
Great info about onions-day length is important. I’ve seen several in UK saying their onions went to flower and after awhile I realized they were planting sets and not plants. We always got sets for green onions only. It’s rare one would develop a bulb as they are biennial and sets are on their second year. So true that when buying plants or seeds and expecting large onions that the day length is for your area. Lol, I started earlier this year to get thicker seedlings. Usually wait till 3/4, but started 2/4 and I see signs of them popping already. I threw all kinds of alliums in as some were older than a year and they will either be a show or no-go. I plant a lot of alliums. Favorite onion-Blush for color and taste and Patterson for long storage. Trying a few heirlooms this year and might find a new one to save seed from vs hybrids above.
Two different red onions, white Spanish and good old Wala Wala. W,W always seem to do the best for me.
You're the third one so far to say they are growing Wala Wala. I so need to get those seeds! 😊
@ My sister loves red but WW always does the best here for me.
Hey sis just came back from getting the fertilizer we talked about for my onion starts and flower starts.
TGIF John! It sounds like you're in good shape for your seed starting season. I'm excited to finally be starting seeds indoors! 😊🌱
@@budgetgardeningvitaThe fun has begun!
Just planted 3 different onion varieties for the first time this week. So excited to see how they do. We use onion almost everyday in our food.
Hi Peggy. That sure is exciting! I love onions and jalapeno peppers on small naan pizzas. I'm hoping to eat plenty of those this year! 😋🧅🌶️🍕
I actually just finished seeding walla walla onions today. I basically did exactly like you. These were my own collected seed from last summer as one plant went to seed from a bulb that stayed in the ground from thr previous year and set seed. Wish me luck using that seed.
Hi Janice! The more I hear about walla wall onions, the more I want to get their seeds. Lol. That's great that you were able to collect your own seeds. Good luck! I'd love to hear if those seeds germinate for you. I mean they should but still, let me know! 😊🧅
@@budgetgardeningvitaI’m interested in outcome also. Just remember sweet onions don’t keep long and I end up freezing those.
This year I planted Parma and Texas Gordo from Baker Creek. I'm in CT. Watch you all the time. Great podcasts! Looking forward to cutting and potting up.
Hi Marlene! Thanks so much for your feedback on my videos. I truly appreciate your kind comment! 🙏🏼 It sounds like a great variety of onions that you'll be growing. I'll surely make update videos once the onions get going. 🧅 Happy gardening, friend! 😊
Again, your timing is amazing. I started some onions already and they're not looking too good. I have plenty of seeds so I was thinking of planting again sometime this weekend. I think I overwatered my first batch. They're alive but not looking too healthy. I have Ruby Red and Red Wethersfield and I think somewhere I also have a yellow onion. Thanks again for a great video.
Hi Maureen! You still have plenty of time. Go ahead and sow more seeds. It sounds like you'll be growing a nice variety of onions. Good luck with this second batch, friend! 🤞🏼😊🧅
Thanks for sharing your experience with us. I am in zone 7 Md. I am trying walla walla, chives, red burgundy onions. I am also looking for candy variety. Good luck growing!
You're very welcome! I really should try some walla wall onions. It sounds like you'll be growing some great onions this year. Thanks for sharing, friend! 😊🧅
What is your favorite kind of onion to grow in your garden?
What is your nursery is it public or just yours ?
Hi there! I have a plant nursery on my property where I sell flowers & vegetable plants from spring through fall. I have a listing for it on Facebook Marketplace and people stop by with appointments. 😊🌸
Thanks I will take a look
Thank you, I have some begonia seeds to plant. I have never grown them before.Just in time.
Hi Tammy. How exciting! Definitely get them planted soon since they take a long time to grow from seed. I'll be making a video soon when I sow my wax begonia seeds. 😊🌷
Last year I grew the variety "Big" begonias. They were so gorgeous. As a result, begonias have become one of my favorite flowers and a "must have" in my 2025 garden. This year I am growing the variety "Viking", 3 different color flowers with 3 different colors of foliage. I sowed my seeds about 25 days ago and they haven't germinated yet. I am starting to get nervous that they won't germinate. I collected some of the "Big" begonia seeds from last year, after seeing one of your videos about collecting the seeds. I decided to sow them as a backup just in case the others don't germinate. I am not sure how they will do since they are hybrids, a cross between angel wing and fibrous begonias. I also purchased some seeds of the variety "Stone Hedge", which I should receive in a few days. They grow to about 40 inches tall. I thought they would be interesting to try. I really enjoy your channel!
Hi Christine. That variety of begonia is very pretty! I'm crossing my fingers for you and your begonia seeds. Do you have them on a heat mat? Also, have you kept the seeds moist? You don't want them to dry out. I don't put fine vermiculite on my begonia seeds but honestly it's probably a good idea just because the seeds take so long to germinate and the vermiculite holds some more moisture in. Don't give up. If seeds don't germinate, try sowing more, put them on a heat mat, and make sure they don't dry out. Good luck, my friend! Keep me posted. 😊💞🤞🏼
Just started non stop begonias yesterday. Seeds are from a new co so I’m a bit nervous. I started growing these 2 years ago. They love heat. I had only 1 survive overwintering and will either take cuttings or bring in as houseplants this year. I did sow geraniums and impatiens yesterday also, but the petunias will wait as they grow fast. Of all the flowers I’m finding the impatiens and begonias to look the best all through to fall. I’m wondering if I should have something solid under the heat mats as they are just on the wire racks with heavy duty trays/humidity domes set on them? I see you set pots right on the heat mat. I hooked all 3 mats to controller as I had forgotten how hot they get without one 😬. Right now I have coleus that are taking over and I already have several cuttings in water and the roots are ready to jump ship😂.
I'd love to know how many days it takes for your non stop begonias to germinate. Do you have them on a heat mat and did you sprinkle vermiculite on them? I've never sprinkled vermiculite and my begonia seeds germinate fine but I imagine it's a good idea since the seeds are so small, surface sown, and take a while to germinate. I'm holding off on sowing impatiens for at least another week or two. Last year they and my wax / fibrous begonias got HUGE and were all blooming inside. I know that's not a bad thing but I'm still holding off. I need to look back and see exactly when did I start both of those last year. I don't have anything under my heat mats. It may be a good idea for you to try though. By the way, when is your last frost date? I'm curious since you also have coleus going. Did you start those from seed? 🌸
@ I sowed geranium, NS begonias and impatiens 2/4. I just checked 2/7 and 1 geranium is up and with magnifying glass I think the impatiens are starting. I did sprinkle a tiny bit of vermiculite on geraniums but they are still visible to get light. I did not use vermiculite on begonias or impatiens. I’m not a huge fan of vermiculite on top as I’ve had it turn green if too thick-holds water too much and depending on if it’s fine, which I have right now. The coleus I took cuttings last fall, rooted in water and potted up. I’ve since took cuttings off of that to gain control of it. It may be how I treat NS begonias this fall. Last frost 5/12 but we don’t plant out warm crops/flowers till 6/1 because that last week of May there is a Huge chance of frost in our low elevation-I no longer want to cover everything, too much work and worry. Z5a, WI. I just was reviewing notes from last year and I’m going to count back my starting dates from week of 6/1 which is actual transplant date not frost date. I number each week backwards. My best advice is always keep a journal. I use a cheap annual planner from Menards as it has plenty of room for notes with each month. I use to use a free calendar-it works but note area is short-something I have to get more organized on 😂. I like to keep track of sow dates, germination dates, and how they perform (fast/slow growers, ect) and weather especially major events/temp changes. Knowing how a plant grows comes from experience and helps when knowing when to sow for your area. Definitely backing off on tomatoes, peppers and petunias again. I’m hoping to have the redo of greenhouse done in time. I was happy to realize that by the time I start tomatoes that the onions will be transplanted out. Some hot peppers need a few more days than sweet peppers. I’m aiming at not having blossoms and over grown plants by 6/1 and think this might be the year. I’ve never kept such exact organized notes until 3 years ago and think I finally have a grip on it, 😄 and I’ve been gardening for quite awhile and just winging it. It’s difficult when we see others starting seeds and you feel like you’re behind-now when I feel that way I look at my notes for my garden and the pressure is off and I have control. I think the heat mats are working fine with heavy trays now that I’m seeing germination. Connecting 3 mats to one controller was something I was experimenting with last year and they seem to be working with a splitter, but not sure if they do using a power strip. Not a lot of info out there, just know to not exceed wattage for controller.
@dustyflats3832 Thank you for the detailed information. I agree with you that it's always tempting to start seeds when we see others on RUclips starting them. But you're right, we have to hold off and sow our seeds when the time is right for our area. ☺️💞🌸
I never knew the seeds were so tiny, I wanted so bad to collect my wax begonia seeds from last year but thought they were sterile because I didnt see what I assumed the seeds would look like. I guess I should have checked google or RUclips to find out for sure what they look like.
Hi there. I have videos that show how to collect the seeds from begonias as well as many other plants. That's ok. Be on the lookout for seeds this year and try growing them next year. It'll be something fun to look forward to. 😊🌸

I too live in New Hampshire and just found your channel!
Hello neighbor! Are you enjoying the snow today? I've been busy winter sowing more perennials. Great day for it! 😊🌱❄️
I’m at work until 6. I put 5 milk jugs out last weekend and have many more to go. Catching up on some prior videos of yours. I’m in Derry
@Chefabs911 At least the snow has pretty much stopped so your commute home shouldn't be too bad. Happy winter sowing and thanks for reaching out. I look forward to hearing more from you. 💞☺️
Oh my goodness! I can't believe how small those seeds are! I'm assuming tuberous begonias aren't hardy in zone 5 or you would have millions self sowing in your garden. I'm not experienced enough to grow these from seed so I'll have fun watching yours. 😍
Hi Carla! That's correct - tuberous begonias are not hardy in my zone 5b garden. They are only hardy in zones 9-11. I have been overwintering the tubers for years but it has also been fun starting from seed. I'll definitely make update videos once the little seeds germinate! 😊🌷
I’ve never grown or even bought any Begonias. Maybe this year I can afford a couple in the Spring.
Hi Beth! I love begonias. Tuberous begonias look great in pots and wax / fibrous begonias look awesome in the landscape. I rely heavily on both in my yard and even overwinter the tuberous begonia tubers each year which is a great way to save money. You should definitely consider this plant in your yard. 💞😊
Hey sis you getting the mixed bag storm we’re getting here? I made it out to Starbucks to get my weekly coffee grounds pick up. Roads were terrible, and this is from a retired plow truck driver for the town then the state before becoming dispatcher. If you don’t mind me asking what do you use to feed your inside seedlings? I used to use aquarium water,it had the fish waste in it but like I said I lost my aquariums last summer so looking for ideas.
Hi John! It makes me happy and grateful that you call me sis. I never had a brother so thank you for that. 🙏🏼 Yep - we're getting the same weather as you here - snow and ice. Ugh! I purposely made no plans to go out today due to the weather. But how can you say no to your weekly Starbucks run? I'm glad you made it home safely. I use Miracle-Gro for my flower seedlings and I use Alaska fish emulsion for my vegetable seedlings. I have a turtle but I've heard it's not safe to use that water. Fish waste is totally fine, though. 🐢🐟😊
@ we have way too much in common not to be related (sister from another mother is my guess). Thanks for the tips, still say when the weather gets better we will have to meet for a beefalo burger in Manchester. Hopefully my ugly mug won’t scare you.
I'm so excited to be sowing my tuberous begonia seeds. Seed starting 2025 is underway! Have you ever sown tuberous begonia seeds? Or do you plan to this year? Let me know! Any secrets that you want to share with sowing these seeds? 😊🌱
Don’t fertilize Marigolds or Cosmos they don’t like it.
Hi Rose. Great points! Thank you for mentioning that. 😊🌷
Lots of great information…thank you!
Thanks so much! 🌸😊
Feb 6 in zone 5 with tons of snow but I will try with last years coneflower seed and see how it goes, in a while I may put delphinium seeds out too to try. Thanks for this video. I’m not so much a seed collector because I grow a lot of hybrids and they don’t come true to seed.
Hi Rose! Some echinacea seeds need 1-2 months of a cold period (and some don't need any at all). I say go for it! The fun thing about collecting seeds (even from hybrid plants) is that you may make a fun, unique plant. Happy gardening, friend! 😊🌸
You've inspired me to try winter sowing this year here in Maine. I hope I'm not too late. I heard you say that you don't winter sow vegetables but I was hoping that perhaps I could do a few vegetables and a few perennials do you know which veggies would be the best to try?
Hi Jane. I'm so glad you're trying winter sowing, neighbor! It's snowing here in New Hampshire and you better believe I'm continuing to winter sow. 😊 Many perennial seeds need between 1-2 months of a cold period (consistently below 40 degrees Fahrenheit) so you should still be ok sowing those through the month of February. As far as vegetables (and annual flowers) go, you can sow those any time really during the winter (once temps are consistently below freezing). This generally happens 'around' Winter Solstice. The seeds sleep and are dormant this whole time. The key is when tender plants germinate / sprout, you may need to protect them on the days/nights that we get a freeze otherwise you'll lose them. I just haven't gotten around to sowing seeds for tender plants but I will probably in March into April. I'll be winter sowing cold tolerant flowers this week (I made a video on which ones I'll be sowing). If I wanted to sow cold tolerant veggies, some good choices would be lettuce, spinach, kale, Brussel sprouts, Swiss chard, arugula, beets, peas and brassicas would be a great choice during February. But again, you could sow every seed including heat-loving plants now and they would be fine. It all comes down to time. I hope that all makes sense. 🌸🌷
Vita, your videos are so detailed and informative. Thanks for sharing your techniques and ideas!
Thank you so much for your kind comment. I appreciate the feedback on my videos. Happy gardening, friend! 😊💗🪻
Trying all methods: some winter-sown, some in potting mix in fridge for a month, and just bought another packet to try this method. Wish me luck!
Yes! Gardening is one big experiment and it's good to try multiple methods and not give up. Some plants are worth the extra effort, and Delphiniums and Lavender are two that are definitely worth that extra effort. Good luck my friend! 🤞🏼💞
Wow! I had no idea of how long of a shelf life seeds have! Here I am, worrying if my 3 and 4 year old seeds will bloom! Didn't know! Thanks for sharing!
Well... I'm not holding much hope for those very old seeds. But it's now or never lol. Different seeds have different shelf lives. For your seeds, you could always look up what the shelf life is for each kind of plant, or you could do what I do and just use them up. Onion seeds are only viable for 1 year or so, so those are definitely seeds you don't want to hold onto. Good luck, friend! 🤞🏼😊🌸
Love your kitty!!!
Awww. Thanks, Valerie! 😊🐈
I love my small leaf rhododendron. It's been growing in containers for over 5 years, it has survived several polar winters and is the first to flower. Supper hardy in Chicago.
What a great idea to put a small leaf rhododendron in a container. I have some that are very small and I may transplant a few in containers. Do you leave yours out all winter long or do you put it in a shed or something? 😊🌼
Lovely. Thanks
You're very welcome, friend! 😊🌸
I love Sweet Woodruff. I'm looking forward to transplanting some this year.
It really is so dainty! I only have a few pots of it but am hopeful that once I plant it out in the landscape it can start spreading. 😊🌼
😮
😊🌸
I'm trying this plant in my winter sowing this year! I will be starting it in the next few days :)
Hi Marybeth. Yay - that's awesome! I love the Sea Holly in my yard. Such a pretty flower! 😊🌷
😊
😊💗
Thank you Vita! I love the 'Basket of Gold' and will have to find that one! I think spring is my favorite season for flowers. Like you, we don't get many blooms from November to March. The only flower I didn't see on your list are hellebores. I love their sweet blooms but the plants are very pricey so I add a few every year. Stinking hellebores (Helleborus foetidus), which don't actually stink, will naturalize if you want one as a ground cover. I don't have any in my garden yet but they are at our local arboretum and have really pretty foliage once they are done flowering. Callie is a beautiful cat and so is your orange tabby.
Hi Carla! 'Basket of Gold' reminds me of alyssum except it's yellow. I really do love it and hope to divide it in the spring. It'd also be nice to collect seed from it this year. Oh I love, love, LOVE Hellebores! I do have a few of them in my yard and I included them in my early spring blooming perennials video that I made a few days ago. I even had success dividing those so now I have more! Thank you in regards to my kitties. They're so cute and because of that I'm ok with them hanging out with me in the videos. 🥰🐈⬛🐈
@@budgetgardeningvita I like the new variety of hellebores with more upright facing flowers. I believe Monrovia markets them. Your kitties are like ours, they want attention when you’re in the middle of doing something. And of course we give it to them 🥰
@carlas872 I should invest in them. They're worth the money. I'll be on the lookout for the spring. A purring cat on your lap is priceless! 😻
Awesome video, clear and concise. Thank you.

Thanks so much. That iris is just so striking and sweet! I can tell they need to be divided which is a good problem to have so I plan to divide and move them around this year. I'm already looking forward to next year when they've been divided and hopefully blooming even better. The joys of gardening! 😅🪻
Ooooh! Love the longer review format. Brava!
Thanks so much! I appreciate the feedback. 😊💗
@budgetgardeningvita I'll be rewatching too.
Vita, thank you for all the perennial information in this video. Well done. One thing to keep in mind is that the phrase 'deer resistant' doesn't necessarily mean deer won't harm the plants. If deer are hungry enough they will eat anything. The 'deer resistant' plants might be their least favorite, but they are not 'deer proof' by any means. We're having this issue now as hungry deer are eating anything they can find, including 'deer resistant' plants.
Thank you so much. I appreciate the support. You are very correct. In many videos, I do state that if deer are hungry, they will browse or eat any plant. I forgot to state that in this video. But it's a very valid point, friend. 🙏🏼😊🦌
When you plant the poppys outside, do you plant like varieties together or mix them out in the garden? Thank you for the super helpful content!
Hi there. I prefer to plant them out in similar / same groupings so that they have more of an impact in the garden. I think it's more of a personal choice. Some people like the mixed look in the garden. Honestly I think both ways look great. Poppies are such a great plant to have blooming. 😊🌸
I’m new to your page. Love your setup
Hi there. Welcome to my page! And thank you. I really do enjoy this set up for seed starting. 😊🌸
Beautiful Calico kitty! Callie wanted to be the star! 🌟
Hi Jen! Awwww. Thank you! She sure did! Sweet kitty! 💗
Cali stole the show 😻😻😻 Interesting list!
She sure did! Gotta love our pets. 😊😻 I was surprised I had that many plants blooming in mid-spring. I bought Trillium last year but they're still in my plant nursery. I plan to get them in the landscape this year. 🌷
I wish I could plant freely, but the deer and rabbit pressure is too much. They are attracted to my landscape because everything else is cedar, buckthorn, and oaks so I have to fence everything. And you never chance a small tree as a flowering crabapple 😂 the bucks would shred it. I have plenty of room to plant, but not fenced in and those areas are filled up. Fencing isn’t cheap. I had extra irises, coneflower and day lillies I tried outside the fence and I seen they attacked them. It’s too dry, hot and sandy here for many flowers and I’m also Z5. The past few winters were way above avg temps and it just takes a few days of a polar vortex like WI had this year to fry plants. I will be really surprised if I have any volunteers. I love azaleas and rhododendrons but I don’t think they would do well and definitely would need fencing, yours looked very nice. Sigh. There are a few flowers/herb that go rampant here-very aggressive: Woodland anemone, oregano, vinca periwinkle, purple morning glory, plaintan hosta, spider wort and a yellow flowered Gold moss stonecrop sold also under the name Stepables. The latter is a hideously aggressive plant and will take over any lawn and would give creeping Charlie a run for sure. I’ve battle all of them every year and can’t get rid of them because one piece of root left behind they take off. And I have no idea about this morning glory that was here, but I never seen them return like they do and I never let them seed out. I’ve tried for years to get peonies to bloom-finally last year I had a couple flowers 🙌🏼. It’s in an area I dumped tons of wood chips over 5 years ago and it must be rich enough to give them whatever it needs. So looking forward to spring and new spring bulbs. Thanks for the overview 😀
It definitely sounds like you have challenging situation on your and between the deer and rabbits. We have deer also but they pick and choose what they want and from certain areas of the yard lol. No rabbits yet but I've heard they are in New Hampshire so unfortunately I think it's just a matter of time before they find my yard. I love peonies so much. This is the year I plan to divide and move a ton of them. I have a lot and I want more. 🥰
